How do I budget biweekly paychecks when my bills are monthly?

Add up your monthly bills, multiply by 12 and divide by 26. Move that amount into a separate bills account every payday, and pay every bill from there. The account covers each bill no matter where it falls between paydays, the two extra paychecks a year fill it up, and whatever is left of each paycheck is yours to spend and save. With $2,110 of monthly bills, that is $973.85 per paycheck.

Why biweekly pay and monthly bills clash

A year has 52 weeks, so biweekly pay arrives 26 times, not 24. Most months you get two paychecks, and twice a year you get three. Bills do the opposite: rent, car payment and phone arrive once a month on a fixed date. Two problems follow:

Worked example: Jordan's 2027

Jordan takes home $1,850 every other Friday; the first payday of 2027 is 8 January. Jordan's monthly bills:

BillDue onAmount
Rent1st1,400
Car insurance5th140

Car payment15th320
Phone20th65
Electricity and internet25th150
Total per month2,110

Per paycheck into the bills account: $2,110 × 12 ÷ 26 = $973.846…, rounded up to $973.85. That leaves Jordan $876.15 of every paycheck for groceries, gas, fun and savings, the same amount every time.

The table shows the bills account through 2027. January's rent and insurance were already paid from December money, so the plan starts with the bills due from 10 January on. Jordan starts the account with $350 (why, see below).

What the table tells Jordan:

Calculate your own bills transfer

The calculator runs the next 12 months day by day from your next payday, as in the table above. Due days after the end of a short month (29, 30, 31) count on the last day of that month.

The simpler alternative: budget on two paychecks

If a separate account feels like too much, plan every month on two paychecks only ($3,700 for Jordan), and pay each bill from the paycheck that arrives before it. Then write down in advance what the third paychecks are for: Jordan's two extra paychecks are $3,700 a year, enough to fill a sinking fund for car repairs and presents or to make a large extra debt payment. The catch is the uneven split, and it moves because paydays move through the month. In January 2027, Jordan's 8 January paycheck covers only $420 of bills (10th, 15th and 20th), while the 22 January paycheck has to cover $1,690: electricity on the 25th plus February's rent and insurance. You have to shift money between paychecks yourself, and redo it as the dates move. The bills account does that for you.

Follow-up questions

Which months have three paychecks? It depends on your first payday. For a Friday payday starting 8 January 2027 they are April and October 2027; starting 1 January 2027 they would be January, July and December, because that year then has 27 paydays. The calculator lists them for your date.

What if I get paid weekly? The same idea works with 52 instead of 26: bills × 12 ÷ 52 per paycheck. Usually four months a year then have five paydays.

Can I ask for different due dates? Often yes. Many lenders and utilities let you move a due date. Moving big bills away from the same week makes the simple two-paycheck method much easier.

What goes into the bills account and what does not? Fixed amounts on fixed dates. Groceries, gas and eating out stay in your everyday spending from the $876.15.

It opens on one number, what you can safely spend today, which accounts for your payday and your upcoming bills and updates when you add a purchase; it runs in a browser on a computer, not on phones. It is optional: the calculator above is free.
