Christmas budget calculator: how much should you save per month?

Add up every gift by name, then the other costs people forget: food, decorations, cards and travel. Add a buffer of about 10%, and divide the total by the number of months you have left to save before December. Example: $620 of gifts and $375 of other costs make $995, or $1,094.50 with the buffer. Saved from January, that is $99.50 a month; started in October, it is $547.25 a month.

Calculate your Christmas budget

One gift line per person or group: name, amount per gift, number of gifts. Deposits are counted from your start month up to and including November, so the money is there when the shopping starts.

What the example shows: other costs are over a third of the total ($375 of $995). A budget that only lists gifts is short from the start. And starting in October instead of January makes the same Christmas cost five and a half times as much per month.

How your total compares

In the National Retail Federation's 2025 holiday survey, US consumers planned to spend $890.49 on average: $627.93 on gifts for family and friends and $262.56 on seasonal items like food, decorations and greeting cards (NRF, 16 October 2025; survey of 8,247 adults, 1 to 7 October 2025). That is an average, not a target: your number depends on how many people you buy for and whether you travel. It is useful as a check that you did not forget a category.

Follow-up questions

It is already autumn. What now? Calculate the two-month amount. If it is too high, cut the list now: set a lower amount per gift, agree on a gift exchange instead of buying for everyone, or pay the part you cannot save from your December budget without borrowing.

Where should the Christmas money go? In a separate savings account or a named fund in your budget, so it is not spent in October. That is a sinking fund; our sinking funds calculator handles Christmas together with your other yearly costs.

Should next year start in January? Yes. After Christmas, write down what you really spent and divide it by 11: that is next year's monthly amount.
